Exemptions for International Students

Only international students need to contact our office for exemption requests.  All exemption requests MUST be submitted to the Campus Health Insurance Office during the published “Open Enrollment” periods and each semester thereafter.  These “Open Enrollment” notices are communicated to you through your official University of Arizona email address (@email.arizona.edu).  Failure to do so will result in you being liable for paying the insurance premium.  Cancellation of the Student Health Insurance is not permitted through UAccess Student.

If you register for classes in any of the following semesters, your exemption request must be received by the deadline date:

Winter session 2009 & Spring 2010 – January 27, 2010
Summer Pre-session & Summer 2010 session I – June 21, 2010
Summer 2010 session II – July 26, 2010

Fall 2010 – September 7, 2010

In most cases the following circumstances may be acceptable exemptions from enrollment in the Student Health Insurance:

If you fall into any of the listed categories below, please submit the Exemption Request form and required documentation to our office by fax, email or mail.  Please include your name, student ID number and the semester in which you are requesting the exemption.  Once received, you will be notified through your official university email address (@email.arizona.edu) within ten business days to let you know if your request has been approved.

Exemptions cannot be made for Individual policies.

1.  If you have a Government Sponsor that provides insurance for you that meets or exceeds the student health insurance plan.

2.If you have an Official Sponsor that provides insurance for you that meets or exceeds the student health insurance plan.  Family members are not an official sponsor under this provision.

3.If you (or your spouse or parent) have The University of Arizona employer benefits.

4.If you (or your spouse or parents) have a US employer who provides health insurance for you that meets or exceeds the student health insurance plan.

5.If you are an exchange student with insurance automatically provided to you by your home-university or organization coordinating your exchange.  The insurance must meet or exceed the UA student health insurance plan.  Note that not all home-universities/organizations will allow for you to be exempt.

6. If you are outside the U.S. for a whole semester doing any of the following; Research, Thesis, Dissertation or Distance Learning.  Documentation from your College verifying your circumstances will be required.

7.  If you are a Transfer Student registered for ONLY a summer course and enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Program provided through your Home University.  Proof of insurance from your Home University will be required.

8. If you are registered for ONLY a summer pre-session or winter session course.  Written notification specifying which session you are enrolled in will be required.
